Three people were without a home Wednesday evening after their Holualoa residence was destroyed by fire earlier in the day.
Firefighters responding to the 5:43 a.m. report found the home, a two-story wooden structure located mauka of Highway 180 and south of Holualoa Elementary School, engulfed in flames, according to the Hawaii Fire Department. Three occupants were evacuated and assisted by the American Red Cross.
Calls to the American Red Cross Hawaii State Chapter offices in Honolulu and Hilo for more information on the nonprofit organization’s assistance to the displaced residents were not returned as of press time Wednesday.
The fire was declared out at 7 a.m. and fire officials continue to investigate its cause, according to the department. No injuries were reported and no structures were involved. The home has been deemed a total loss.
Highway 180, also known as Old Mamalahoa Highway, was closed about 6:30 a.m. between Hualalai Road and Holualoa Elementary School while firefighters remained on the scene. The highway reopened to both lanes of travel about 10 a.m., according to the Hawaii Police Department.
